Spotlight on volunteering in Ballarat

A strong, dedicated volunteer workforce provides support and assistance to patients, clients, residents and their families, right across Grampians Health. One standout initiative is the Volunteer Simulated Patient (VSP) Program in Ballarat, which supports the clinical education of both emerging and current healthcare professionals.
Throughout the university semester, our dedicated volunteers take on the role of patient or other individuals in a carefully designed, realistic healthcare scenario.
These simulations are an essential part of training, allowing medical students and professionals to develop their communication, diagnostic and interpersonal skills in a safe, supportive and controlled environment.
Each volunteer participates in structured sessions where they follow a script and portray various medical conditions or situations. They are asked to provide feedback on their experience, helping students improve their bedside manner, history-taking, physical examination techniques, and overall patient interaction skills.
Importantly, VSP’s are never subjected to invasive procedures and are always thoroughly briefed, supported and respected throughout the process.
Simulations are conducted in the state-of-the-art Education Centre located in the CEP building, as well as in the Deakin University space, thanks to the strong partnership with Grampians Health.
By volunteering as a Simulated Patient, individuals not only contribute to better healthcare outcomes, but also find personal fulfillment in helping educate the next generation of compassionate and competent health professionals.
