Oncology Services

The Medical Oncology (Chemotherapy) outreach service provided by BRICC to Wimmera Health Care Group (Horsham and district health services) will soon increase from a fortnightly onsite service to a weekly service.

This will increase the opportunity for patients to attend the clinic, particularly increase options for patients in terms of review appointments. We also hope to commence a teleconference outreach service later in 2017.

Wellness Services

The Wellness on Wheels program offered by BRICC at Stawell Regional Health has grown significantly since commencement in September 2016. In the coming weeks, the popular Oncology Massage program will be expanded to meet demand.

Radiation Therapy (BAROC)

The range of advanced treatment techniques continues to develop at BAROC, ensuring patients in the Grampians region access to treatment techniques equivalent to those offered very best cancer centres around the world.

Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR)

Most recently BAROC has implemented SABR for treatment of early stage lung cancers and small lung metastases. SABR uses many small, highly accurate treatment beams to deliver a dose to the tumour that is much higher than conventional radiotherapy. As such, for suitable patients, the treatment can be delivered in one to five appointments, compared with thirty. This highly precise treatment can be as effective as surgery but without the risks and recovery time. The BAROC program is soon to expand to include tumours in other parts of the body.

Hypofractionation for Prostate Radiotherapy

Hypofractionated radiotherapy is when a higher dose of radiation is given per treatment, ultimately reducing the number of treatments required. Studies have recently shown that patients can safely have hypofractionated radiotherapy for prostate cancer with the same outcomes but with the increased convenience. BAROC has since implemented a hypofractionated protocol for eligible patients, allowing for them to have what was once an eight week course of radiotherapy in four weeks.

Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT)

BAROC is currently in the process of implementing VMAT treatment, another high quality technique that reduces the daily treatment time for patients. With VMAT, the dose is continuously delivered as the treatment machine rotates around the patient.
