Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a system of complementary medicine originating from Chinese medicine. Acupuncture uses fine, sterile needles to restore energy flow, bringing mind and body back into balance. Research indicates that stimulating points throughout the body with needles, pressure or laser elicits causes changes in the hormonal, immune and nervous systems.

Acupuncture treatment is being offered as part a Pilot Project in the Wellness Centre, supported by a grant from Grampians Integrated Cancer Services (GICS) as part of their Cancer Conversations Projects.

To be a part of the pilot, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Women with a history of early-stage breast cancer (stages I to III)
  • Free of cancer as determined by an oncologist
  • Troublesome hot flushes defined as at least two hot flushes in 24 hours, present for at least one month prior to referral.
The following are contraindications to being part of the pilot:

  • Initiation or change in hormonal therapy within the past 4 weeks, plans to initiate or change hormonal treatment in the coming 3 months,
  • Pregnancy or breast feeding,
  • Uncontrolled diabetes,
  • Immunosuppression, neutrophil count < 2,
  • Bleeding disorders, use of warfarin/heparin, platelet count < 50,
  • Known colonisation with MRSA.
Initial appointments can be made with Simone Noelker, Wellness Centre Co-ordinator (53208614) once a referral form has been completed by an Oncologist involved in your care.

Oncology Services

The Medical Oncology (Chemotherapy) outreach service provided by BRICC to Wimmera Health Care Group (Horsham and district health services) will soon increase from a fortnightly onsite service to a weekly service.

This will increase the opportunity for patients to attend the clinic, particularly increase options for patients in terms of review appointments. We also hope to commence a teleconference outreach service later in 2017.

Wellness Services

The Wellness on Wheels program offered by BRICC at Stawell Regional Health has grown significantly since commencement in September 2016. In the coming weeks, the popular Oncology Massage program will be expanded to meet demand.

Planning has commencing to expand the Wellness on Wheels program to include Wimmera Health Care Group.

Radiation Therapy (BAROC)

The range of highly technical treatment processes continues to develop at BAROC, offering patient's equivalent radiation therapy techniques to the very best cancer centres around the world. As an example, the service has treated well over 100 breast cancer patients with the 'Deep Inspiration Breath Hold' technique that helps to reduce radiotherapy dose to the heart during breast treatment.

The BAROC team recently implemented new processes to ensure even greater accuracy for high precision treatments. The use of pre-treatment scans to confirm the position of patient's internal organs, known as Cone Beam CT (CBCT), in combination with a treatment couchtop that rotates in 3 dimensions are the latest advancements using BAROC's impressive collection of world-class equipment.
